Ideally, we begin our musical journeys listening to lullabies. But with many adults feeling self conscious about their singing, babies often miss this experience. Reproduced music might fill this gap but it expects no response. With response the elements of music - pitch, rhythm, phrasing, expression - start to fall into place. The voice develops an expanding range. The body learns to release to the demands of rhythm.   In MUSIC PLAY classes we draw on A MUSIC LEARNING THEORY FOR NEWBORN AND YOUNG CHILDREN (Edwin E. Gordon, GIA Publications, Inc., 1997) as well as years of practical and experimental research. These classes are designed to give parents and caregivers the foundation experience required for offering infants and young children an essential gateway to musical confidence and satisfaction.   Our quiet, comfortable studio provides an ideal space for securing your confidence as a musical parent. We present short songs and chants, introducing melody and rhythm; and, we invite your participation. Your child is welcome, but not required to join us. She will see that music is an effective means of communication as well as an avenue to the art and pleasures of sound. Our bodies are our instruments but we will also use rhythm instruments, mostly shakers.   We know how to build (or revive) and expand your vocal skills, but we won’t expect you to perform solo, unless you really want to.
